English Grammar And Imperative - What is Imperative?

Imperatives are verbs used to give commands, orders ,warning or instructions, and (if you use "please") to make a request. There are three moods in an English verb (indicative, imperative and subjunctive)

Example : Give me some butter, please.

In English, imperative sentences are formed simply by inversion of the verb's position. The main verb form is used.

- Please read this article

To make a negative imperative, put "do not" or "don't" before the verb:

- Don't do this.
- Do not come here any more

If you are including yourself in the imperative you can also use "let's" before the verb. The negative of "let's" is "let's not".

- Let's go to the movies.
- Let's not return here anymore.

We can use the imperative on notices and signs.
